Achieve rich, deep exterior colors combined with exceptional durability and a noticeable shine using Valspar Supreme Edge Exterior Paint & Primer Semi-Gloss Tint Base. This premium 100% acrylic formula provides superior protection and a highly washable, sleek finish.
Please Note: This is a Tint Base paint (often called Deep or Accent Base). It contains minimal white pigment and is specifically formulated to be tinted with colorant at the point of purchase to achieve medium-to-deep or vibrant shades. It cannot be used untinted or for white/pastel colors.
Once tinted, enjoy fade-resistant deep color with a finish offering maximum resistance to moisture, stains, and dirt – ideal for high-impact accents like front doors, shutters, or trim in bold hues. Engineered to resist cracking and peeling, it also provides a mold- and mildew-resistant finish. Careful surface preparation is vital as the high sheen reveals imperfections.
Recommended Surfaces: Properly prepared exterior surfaces including wood, hardboard, aluminum siding, vinyl siding*, masonry, brick, stucco, cement composition panels, and primed metal. Excellent for trim/doors/accents in deep colors. Not for use on floors. (Note on Vinyl Siding: Do NOT paint vinyl siding with a color darker than the original color, especially deep shades from a Tint Base, due to high risk of warping.)
Surface Preparation: Remove surface contaminants with an appropriate cleaner, rinse thoroughly, and allow to dry completely. Scrape away loose or peeling paint and sand damaged areas smooth. Dull glossy surfaces by sanding. Ensure surfaces are very smooth. Seal stains (rust, tannin bleed, etc.) with an appropriate stain-blocking primer before painting. Caulk around windows, doors, and other openings after spot priming any bare surfaces. Knots and some woods (like redwood, cedar) contain tannins; the first coat may show some staining, but a second coat will typically provide a uniform appearance. If staining persists, spot prime severe areas with a quality stain-blocking primer.
Application Instructions: Stir paint thoroughly before and during use. If using multiple containers, intermix them to ensure uniform color. Apply only when paint, surface, and air temperatures are between 35°F and 90°F (2°C – 32°C) and expected to remain so during the entire application and drying time. Do not paint if temperatures are expected to drop below 35°F (2°C) within 48 hours of application. Avoid painting in direct, hot sun, or when heavy dew or precipitation is expected within the next 2.5 hours. Apply using a quality brush, roller, or airless sprayer according to manufacturer’s directions.
Clean-up & Disposal: Clean tools and spills immediately with warm, soapy water. Do not pour unused paint down the drain. Consult local authorities for proper disposal and recycling methods in your area.

Q1: What are the best uses for a dark color in a semi-gloss finish on the exterior?
It’s perfect for making a statement on front doors, shutters, window boxes, or other architectural accents where you want a bold color combined with high durability, shine, and easy cleaning.
Q2: Is it ever okay to paint vinyl siding a dark color with this Semi-Gloss Tint Base?
It is highly discouraged and generally unsafe for the siding. Dark colors absorb much more heat than light colors, and painting vinyl darker than its original shade (especially with deep Tint Base colors) dramatically increases the risk of the siding warping, buckling, or otherwise failing due to excessive heat buildup.
Q3: Will the semi-gloss finish make imperfections more obvious, even with a dark color?
Yes. While dark colors can sometimes visually recede or hide minor textural issues better than light colors, the high reflectivity of a semi-gloss sheen will still accentuate any bumps, dents, drips, or poor sanding on the surface, regardless of color depth. Meticulous surface preparation is key.
