Thompson’s® WaterSeal® Transparent Wood Sealer offers proven waterproofing protection for your exterior wood surfaces, helping to prevent water damage and maintain the integrity of your decks, fences, and siding for years to come. This advanced formula not only protects but also enhances the wood by adding a subtle, barely-there color that allows the maximum amount of natural wood grain and texture to show through.

Achieve year-round protection against water and sun damage in just one coat. This sealer exceeds the Industry Standard ASTM-D4446 for Waterproofing Wood and provides a mold-and-mildew-resistant finish to keep your wood looking its best. It’s the perfect choice when you want to protect your wood while celebrating its inherent character. The product comes with a 4-year guarantee on decks and a 5-year guarantee on fences and siding.

Key Features:

  • Waterproofing Protection: Exceeds ASTM-D4446 industry standard, helps prevent water damage.
  • Transparent Opacity: Adds subtle color while allowing the most natural wood grain and texture to show.
  • Durable & Long-Lasting: Guaranteed for 4 years on decks, 5 years on fences and siding.
  • Sun Damage Protection: “Barely tinted sealer and sunblock protects wood.”
  • Mold & Mildew Resistant Finish: Helps keep wood cleaner.
  • One Coat Application: Provides protection in a single coat (a second coat is optional for more color).
  • Water-Based Formula: Easy cleanup with soap and water.

Approximate Coverage: 150 ft²/gal – 400 ft²/gal. Actual coverage will vary due to the porosity and texture of the surface material.

Product Application & Use:

Before You Begin (Important Precautions):

  • Exterior Use Only: Designed specifically for outdoor wood substrates.
  • New Pressure Treated Lumber: Allow 30 days before applying.
  • Temperature & Weather: Ensure surface and air temperature are above 50°F (10°C) during application and for 48 hours after. Do not apply if rain is forecasted within 24 hours.
  • Splash Test: Test surface porosity. Sprinkle water; if it absorbs and darkens within five seconds, the surface is ready. If water beads, protection is not needed.
  • Restrictions: Do not use in below-grade applications or on painted or recently stained surfaces. DO NOT USE AS AN ADDITIVE TO PAINT.
  • Protect Surroundings: Cover plants and shrubs. Move objects that could get overspray. Remove overspray from glass immediately with paint thinner or mineral spirits (though the product is water-based, this suggests some components might be harder to remove from glass if dried).

Preparation Warning: WARNING! Removal of old paint by sanding, scraping or other means may generate dust or fumes that contain lead. Exposure to lead dust or fumes may cause brain damage or other adverse health effects, especially in children or pregnant women. Controlling exposure to lead or other hazardous substances requires the use of proper protective equipment such as a properly fitted respirator (NIOSH approved) and proper containment and cleanup. For more information, call the National Lead Information Center at 1-800-424-LEAD (in US) or contact your local health authority.

Surface Preparation:

  1. Surfaces must be free of all mildew stains, dust, dirt, oil, soot, grease, and other contaminants.
  2. Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to application with a deck cleaner (like those in the Thompson’s® WaterSeal® cleaner line) applied according to label directions and cautions.
  3. Remove all existing loose, flaking, or peeling stain. Failure to do so will result in continued flaking and peeling.
  4. If the surface is damp or wet from cleaning or weather, allow it to dry thoroughly (a minimum of 48 hours) before application.

Application Directions:

  1. Do not mix with other waterproofing products. Do not thin.
  2. Shake well and intermix: Shake or mix thoroughly before and occasionally during use. If using multiple cans (of the same color), intermix them to ensure color uniformity.
  3. Test Patch: Color samples may vary slightly based on wood type and porosity. Always apply to a small test area and let dry to determine final color before proceeding with the entire project.
  4. Apply: Use an exterior stain pad, brush, roller, dipping method, or a garden “pump-up” style sprayer. A sprayer is often simplest for large areas.
  5. Even Application: Keep the leading edge wet and distribute stain evenly to avoid lap marks and maintain uniform color. Work in manageable sections (top to bottom or side to side), using natural breaks as boundaries.
  6. One Coat (Optional Second): Only one coat is necessary for waterproofing protection. If more color is desired, a second coat can be added. Allow the first coat to dry approximately 2 hours. The second coat must be applied within 4 hours of the initial application. (Image on front of packaging may show two coats).
  7. Ventilation: Use only with adequate ventilation.

Dry Time: Drying time will vary depending on temperature and humidity.

  • To Touch: Under normal conditions, should dry to the touch within 2 hours.
  • Recoat (Optional for Color): Apply second coat (if desired) between 2 and 4 hours after the first coat.
  • Light Use/Full Dry: Allow 48 hours or more for surface to fully dry before light traffic or replacing furniture (general guidance, verify on product label).

Product Questions

Q1: What does "Transparent" opacity mean for this sealer? How much color will it add?

Transparent means this sealer is designed to add only a subtle hint of color to your wood while allowing the maximum amount of the natural wood grain and texture to show through. It’s for enhancing the wood’s existing beauty rather than changing its color dramatically like a semi-transparent or solid stain would.

Q2: The product recommends one coat, but says a second can be added. Why would I add a second coat?

One coat of Thompson’s® WaterSeal® Transparent Wood Sealer is all that’s needed for the specified waterproofing protection and guarantee. A second coat is purely optional and would be applied only if you desire a slightly deeper or richer version of the subtle color provided by the first coat. If adding a second coat for color, it must be applied within 2 to 4 hours of the first.

Q3: Can I use this sealer on a brand new pressure-treated wood deck?

The directions state to “Allow 30 days before applying on new pressure treated lumber.” This waiting period allows the wood to dry out sufficiently and for some of the chemicals used in pressure treatment to dissipate, ensuring better penetration and adhesion of the sealer.
