Keep your interior wood projects looking beautiful with Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish. This crystal clear, ultra fast-drying protective topcoat adds lasting beauty and protection to woodwork, furniture, doors, cabinets, and more. The clear top coat effectively shields wood surfaces from scratches, scuffs, and blemishes.

A key advantage of Minwax Polycrylic is that it dries crystal clear and stays crystal clear, making it ideal for use over all Minwax Oil-Based (when fully cured) and Water-Based Stains and colors. It’s particularly well-suited for preserving the true color of light woods like maple, ash, and birch, as it is non-yellowing and non-ambering. The Semi-Gloss finish provides a noticeable shine and excellent durability, making surfaces easy to clean. The ultra-fast-drying formula allows for quick recoats after only 2 hours, helping you complete projects faster. Cleanup is simple with just soap and water, and it has a low odor during application. Note: Minwax Polycrylic Protective Wood Finish may appear milky in the can but applies and dries to a crystal clear protective finish that lasts.

Application Directions:

  1. Surface Preparation: The surface must be dry and free of wax, grease, polish, any foreign matter, or old finishes in poor condition.
  2. Sanding: Sand to a smooth, uniform surface. DO NOT USE STEEL WOOL. Remove dust with a damp cloth. Let dry completely.
  3. Staining (Optional): If desired, apply stain such as Minwax Water Based Wood Stain or Minwax Wood Finish stain to bare wood surfaces following label directions. Wait at least 24 hours before applying Polycrylic Finish over Minwax Wood Finish (oil-based) Stain to ensure it’s thoroughly dry. Polycrylic can also be applied to bare wood
  4. Stir Product: Stir Minwax Polycrylic Finish well before and regularly during use. DO NOT SHAKE, as this can create bubbles.
  5. Application: Apply a THIN coat of Polycrylic Finish with a high-quality synthetic bristle brush. Apply in one direction, with the grain. Do not over-brush.
  6. Sanding Between Coats: Let dry at least 2 hours, then sand with very fine sandpaper (220 grit) to ensure an even finish and proper adhesion of additional coats. Do not use steel wool. Remove all dust with a damp cloth.
  7. Apply Subsequent Coats: Apply a second coat. For additional coats (three coats are recommended for best protection), repeat Step 6 before applying.
  8. Curing: After the final coat, allow 3 hours before light handling and 24 hours before normal use.

Product Questions

Q1: How does the Semi-Gloss Polycrylic finish compare to the Satin version?

Semi-Gloss has a more noticeable shine and reflectivity than Satin. Satin provides a soft, low luster, while Semi-Gloss offers a brighter, more polished look that is also very durable and easy to clean. Both are crystal clear and non-yellowing.

Q2: Is Minwax Polycrylic Semi-Gloss a good choice for kitchen cabinets or bathroom vanities?

Yes, it’s a very good choice. The semi-gloss sheen provides excellent durability and moisture resistance (once fully cured), making it easy to wipe down and keep clean in areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Its crystal clear nature won’t alter the color of painted or light wood cabinets.

Q3: Why is it important not to shake Polycrylic before application?

Shaking Polycrylic (or most clear finishes) can introduce air bubbles into the product. If these bubbles are transferred to your wood surface during application, they can dry and leave tiny bumps or imperfections in the finish. Gentle stirring is always recommended to mix the product without creating bubbles.
