Keep your interior wood projects looking beautiful with Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish in a durable Semi-Gloss sheen. This 1/2 Pint container of crystal clear, ultra fast-drying protective topcoat is perfect for adding lasting beauty and protection to smaller woodwork pieces, furniture accents, doors, cabinets, and crafts. The clear top coat effectively shields wood surfaces from scratches, scuffs, and blemishes.

Minwax Polycrylic is renowned for drying crystal clear and staying crystal clear, making it ideal for use over all Minwax Oil-Based (when fully cured) and Water-Based Stains and colors, as well as on painted surfaces. It’s particularly excellent for preserving the true color of light woods like maple, ash, and birch, as it is non-yellowing and non-ambering. The Semi-Gloss finish provides a noticeable shine and excellent durability, making surfaces easy to clean. The ultra-fast-drying formula allows for quick recoats after only 2 hours. Cleanup is simple with just soap and water, and it has a low odor during application. Note: Minwax Polycrylic Protective Wood Finish may appear milky in the can but applies and dries to a crystal clear protective finish that lasts.

Application Directions:

  1. Surface Preparation: The surface must be dry and free of wax, grease, polish, any foreign matter, or old finishes in poor condition.
  2. Sanding: Sand to a smooth, uniform surface. DO NOT USE STEEL WOOL. Remove dust with a damp cloth. Let dry completely.
  3. Staining (Optional): If desired, apply stain such as Minwax Water Based Wood Stain or Minwax Wood Finish stain to bare wood surfaces following label directions. Wait at least 24 hours before applying Polycrylic Finish over Minwax Wood Finish (oil-based) Stain to ensure it’s thoroughly dry. Polycrylic can also be applied to bare wood or painted surfaces.
  4. Stir Product: Stir Minwax Polycrylic Finish well before and regularly during use. DO NOT SHAKE, as this can create bubbles.
  5. Application: Apply a THIN coat of Polycrylic Finish with a high-quality synthetic bristle brush. Apply in one direction, with the grain (if visible). Do not over-brush.
  6. Sanding Between Coats: Let dry at least 2 hours, then sand with very fine sandpaper (220 grit) to ensure an even finish and proper adhesion of additional coats. Do not use steel wool. Remove all dust with a damp cloth.
  7. Apply Subsequent Coats: Apply a second coat. For additional coats (three coats are recommended for best protection), repeat Step 6 before applying.
  8. Curing: After the final coat, allow 3 hours before light handling and 24 hours before normal use.

Product Questions

Q1: Is this Polycrylic Semi-Gloss good for protecting painted furniture?

Yes, Minwax Polycrylic is an excellent choice for protecting painted furniture. It dries crystal clear so it won’t change the color of your paint (unlike oil-based finishes which can amber). The semi-gloss sheen will add durability and a nice shine, making the surface easier to clean.

Q2: What is the difference between this water-based Polycrylic and an oil-based polyurethane?

Polycrylic is water-based, meaning it has low odor, dries very quickly, cleans up with soap and water, and remains crystal clear (non-yellowing). Oil-based polyurethane has a stronger odor, requires mineral spirits for cleanup, dries slower, and typically imparts a warm amber tone to the wood that can deepen over time. Both offer good protection, but Polycrylic is often preferred for light-colored woods or painted surfaces where color clarity is important.

Q3: The product weight in some details says 236 milligrams, is that correct for a 1/2 pint can?

No, 236 milligrams (which is only 0.23 grams) is far too light for a 1/2 pint (8 fluid ounces) of liquid finish and is a data error. The actual weight of the product in its can is closer to 10-12 ounces (around 300 grams).
