Keep interior wood projects looking beautiful with Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish. This crystal clear, ultra fast-drying protective topcoat adds lasting beauty and protection to woodwork, furniture, doors, cabinets, and more. The clear top coat effectively shields wood surfaces from scratches, scuffs, and blemishes.

A key advantage of Minwax Polycrylic is that it dries crystal clear and stays crystal clear, making it ideal for use over all Minwax Oil-Based (when fully cured) and Water-Based Stains and colors. It’s particularly well-suited for preserving the true color of light woods like maple, ash, and birch, as it is non-yellowing and non-ambering. The Satin finish provides a soft, unique sheen for a modern, cozy, and on-trend look. The ultra-fast-drying formula allows for quick recoats after only 2 hours, helping you complete projects faster. Cleanup is simple with just soap and water, and it has a low odor during application. Note: Minwax Polycrylic Protective Wood Finish may appear milky in the can but applies and dries to a crystal clear protective finish that lasts.

Application Directions:

  1. Surface Preparation: The surface must be dry and free of wax, grease, polish, any foreign matter, or old finishes in poor condition.
  2. Sanding: Sand to a smooth, uniform surface. DO NOT USE STEEL WOOL. Remove dust with a damp cloth. Let dry completely.
  3. Staining (Optional): If desired, apply stain such as Minwax Water Based Wood Stain or Minwax Wood Finish stain to bare wood surfaces following label directions. Wait at least 24 hours before applying Polycrylic Finish over Minwax Wood Finish (oil-based) Stain to ensure it’s thoroughly dry. Polycrylic can also be applied to bare wood.
  4. Stir Product: Stir Minwax Polycrylic Finish well before and regularly during use. DO NOT SHAKE, as this can create bubbles.
  5. Application: Apply a THIN coat of Polycrylic Finish with a high-quality synthetic bristle brush. Apply in one direction, with the grain. Do not over-brush.
  6. Sanding Between Coats: Let dry at least 2 hours, then sand with very fine sandpaper (220 grit) to ensure an even finish and proper adhesion of additional coats. Do not use steel wool. Remove all dust with a damp cloth.
  7. Apply Subsequent Coats: Apply a second coat. For additional coats (three coats are recommended for best protection), repeat Step 6 before applying.
  8. Curing: After the final coat, allow 3 hours before light handling and 24 hours before normal use.

Product Questions

Q1: How does the Satin finish of Polycrylic compare to the Matte version?

Satin finish has a soft, low luster or gentle sheen, whereas Matte has virtually no sheen and provides a flat, non-reflective look. Satin offers slightly more durability and washability than Matte due to its smoother surface, while still providing a modern, subtle elegance.

Q2: Is Minwax Polycrylic suitable for kitchen cabinets?

Yes, Minwax Polycrylic is a good choice for kitchen cabinets. Its durable finish protects against scratches, scuffs, and common household spills. The water-based formula means low odor during application, and it dries clear, preserving the look of your wood or painted cabinets. Three coats are recommended for best durability.

Q3: Can I use a roller to apply Polycrylic for a faster application on larger surfaces?

While the primary recommendation is a high-quality synthetic bristle brush for best control and smoothness, Polycrylic can be applied with a high-density foam roller for smooth surfaces or a short-nap (e.g., 1/4″) synthetic roller for larger flat areas. If rolling, it’s often advised to apply thin coats and avoid overworking the product to prevent bubbles. Some users “tip off” (lightly drag a brush over the rolled area) to smooth it further.
