Keep your smaller interior wood projects looking beautiful with Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish. This 1/2 Pint container of crystal clear, ultra fast-drying protective topcoat adds lasting beauty and protection to woodwork, furniture, doors, cabinets, and more. The clear top coat effectively shields wood surfaces from scratches, scuffs, and blemishes.

A key advantage of Minwax Polycrylic is that it dries crystal clear and stays crystal clear, making it ideal for use over all Minwax Oil-Based (when fully cured) and Water-Based Stains and colors. It’s particularly well-suited for preserving the true color of light woods like maple, ash, and birch, as it is non-yellowing and non-ambering. The Satin finish offers an attractive, classic sheen for a modern and subtle look. The ultra-fast-drying formula allows for quick recoats after only 2 hours, helping you complete projects faster. Cleanup is simple with just soap and water, and it has a low odor during application. Note: Minwax Polycrylic Protective Wood Finish may appear milky in the can but applies and dries to a crystal clear protective finish that lasts.

Application Directions:

  1. Surface Preparation: The surface must be dry and free of wax, grease, polish, any foreign matter, or old finishes in poor condition.
  2. Sanding: Sand to a smooth, uniform surface. DO NOT USE STEEL WOOL. Remove dust with a damp cloth. Let dry completely.
  3. Staining (Optional): If desired, apply stain such as Minwax Water Based Wood Stain or Minwax Wood Finish stain to bare wood surfaces following label directions. Wait at least 24 hours before applying Polycrylic Finish over Minwax Wood Finish (oil-based) Stain to ensure it’s thoroughly dry. Polycrylic can also be applied to bare wood.
  4. Stir Product: Stir Minwax Polycrylic Finish well before and regularly during use. DO NOT SHAKE, as this can create bubbles.
  5. Application: Apply a THIN coat of Polycrylic Finish with a high-quality synthetic bristle brush. Apply in one direction, with the grain. Do not over-brush.
  6. Sanding Between Coats: Let dry at least 2 hours, then sand with very fine sandpaper (220 grit) to ensure an even finish and proper adhesion of additional coats. Do not use steel wool. Remove all dust with a damp cloth.
  7. Apply Subsequent Coats: Apply a second coat. For additional coats (three coats are recommended for best protection), repeat Step 6 before applying.
  8. Curing: After the final coat, allow 3 hours before light handling and 24 hours before normal use.

Product Questions

Q1: How much area will this 1/2 pint of Polycrylic Satin cover?

A 1/2 pint (8 fl oz) typically covers around 30-35 square feet with one coat. This makes it ideal for smaller projects like picture frames, small boxes, craft items, or for touching up existing finishes.

Q2: Is the Satin finish very shiny?

The Satin finish in Polycrylic offers a soft, subtle luster. It’s not as reflective as a semi-gloss or gloss finish, but it has more sheen than a completely flat or matte finish. It provides an elegant, modern look and is generally good at hiding minor imperfections while still being cleanable.

Q3: Can I use this Polycrylic Satin finish on a piece of furniture that was previously finished with an oil-based polyurethane?

Yes, you can apply water-based Polycrylic over a fully cured oil-based polyurethane. Ensure the old finish is clean, dry, and lightly sanded to create a dull surface for better adhesion. Remove all sanding dust before applying the Polycrylic.
