Keep your interior wood projects looking beautiful with Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish. This crystal clear, water-based protective finish adds lasting beauty and protection to woodwork, furniture, doors, cabinets, and more. The clear top coat effectively shields wood surfaces from scratches, scuffs, and blemishes.

A key advantage of Minwax Polycrylic is that it dries crystal clear and stays crystal clear, making it ideal for use over all Minwax Oil-Based and Water-Based Stains and colors. It’s particularly well-suited for preserving the true color of light woods like maple, ash, and birch, as it is non-yellowing and non-ambering. The ultra-fast-drying formula allows for quick recoats after only 2 hours, helping you complete projects faster. It offers a soft, unique matte sheen for a modern, cozy, and on-trend look. Cleanup is simple with just soap and water, and it has a low odor during application.

Application Directions:

  1. Surface Preparation: The surface must be dry and free of wax, grease, polish, any foreign matter, or old finishes in poor condition.
  2. Sanding: Sand to a smooth, uniform surface. DO NOT USE STEEL WOOL. Remove dust with a damp cloth. Let dry completely.
  3. Staining (Optional): If desired, apply stain such as Minwax Water Based Wood Stain or Minwax Wood Finish stain to bare wood surfaces following label directions. Wait at least 24 hours before applying Polycrylic Finish over Minwax Wood Finish (oil-based) Stain to ensure it’s thoroughly dry. Polycrylic can also be applied to bare wood.
  4. Stir Product: Stir Minwax Polycrylic Finish well before and regularly during use. DO NOT SHAKE, as this can create bubbles.
  5. Application: Apply a THIN coat of Polycrylic Finish with a high-quality synthetic bristle brush. Apply in one direction, with the grain. Do not over-brush.
  6. Sanding Between Coats: Let dry at least 2 hours, then sand with very fine sandpaper (220 grit) to ensure an even finish and proper adhesion of additional coats. Do not use steel wool. Remove all dust with a damp cloth.
  7. Apply Subsequent Coats: Apply a second coat. For additional coats (three coats are recommended for best protection), repeat Step 6 before applying.
  8. Curing: After the final coat, allow 3 hours before light handling and 24 hours before normal use.

Product Questions

Q1: What is the main advantage of using Minwax Polycrylic over an oil-based polyurethane?

Minwax Polycrylic is water-based, so it dries crystal clear and stays clear without the ambering effect that oil-based polyurethanes develop over time. This makes it ideal for preserving the true color of light woods or painted surfaces. It also has a much lower odor during application and cleans up easily with soap and water.

Q2: Can I apply Polycrylic over an oil-based stain, like Minwax Wood Finish stain?

Yes, you can apply Minwax Polycrylic over thoroughly dried Minwax Wood Finish (oil-based) stain. The application directions recommend waiting at least 24 hours after applying the oil-based stain to ensure it is completely dry before top coating with Polycrylic.

Q3: How durable is Polycrylic compared to oil-based polyurethane, especially for something like a tabletop?

While oil-based polyurethane is traditionally known for its hardness and durability, modern water-based finishes like Minwax Polycrylic offer excellent protection against scratches, scuffs, and blemishes for most interior applications, including tabletops. For very high-wear surfaces, oil-based polyurethane might still have a slight edge in ultimate toughness for some users, but Polycrylic is a very durable and popular choice for furniture. Three coats are recommended for best protection.
