Keep your interior wood projects looking beautiful with Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish in a brilliant Gloss sheen. This crystal clear, ultra fast-drying water-based topcoat adds lasting beauty and robust protection to woodwork, furniture, doors, cabinets, and more. The hard, clear protective coating is highly resistant to damage from abrasion, scuffing, chipping, water, alcohol, and other common household chemicals, ensuring the wood surface beneath stays pristine.

A key advantage of Minwax Polycrylic is that it dries crystal clear and stays crystal clear, making it ideal for use over all Minwax Oil-Based (when fully cured) and Water-Based Stains and colors. It’s particularly well-suited for preserving the true color of light woods like maple, ash, and birch, as it is non-yellowing and non-ambering. The Gloss finish provides a high-shine, durable, and easy-to-clean surface. The ultra-fast-drying formula allows for quick recoats after only 2 hours. Cleanup is simple with just soap and water, and it has a low odor during application. Note: Minwax Polycrylic Protective Wood Finish may appear milky in the can but applies and dries to a crystal clear protective finish that lasts.

Application Directions:

  1. Surface Preparation: The surface must be dry and free of wax, grease, polish, any foreign matter, or old finishes in poor condition.
  2. Sanding: Sand to a smooth, uniform surface. DO NOT USE STEEL WOOL. Remove dust with a damp cloth. Let dry completely.
  3. Staining (Optional): If desired, apply stain such as Minwax Water Based Wood Stain or Minwax Wood Finish stain to bare wood surfaces following label directions. Wait at least 24 hours before applying Polycrylic Finish over Minwax Wood Finish (oil-based) Stain to ensure it’s thoroughly dry. Polycrylic can also be applied to bare wood.
  4. Stir Product: Stir Minwax Polycrylic Finish well before and regularly during use. DO NOT SHAKE, as this can create bubbles.
  5. Application: Apply a THIN coat of Polycrylic Finish with a high-quality synthetic bristle brush. Apply in one direction, with the grain. Do not over-brush.
  6. Sanding Between Coats: Let dry at least 2 hours, then sand with very fine sandpaper (220 grit) to ensure an even finish and proper adhesion of additional coats. Do not use steel wool. Remove all dust with a damp cloth.
  7. Apply Subsequent Coats: Apply a second coat. For additional coats (three coats are recommended for best protection), repeat Step 6 before applying.
  8. Curing: After the final coat, allow 3 hours before light handling and 24 hours before normal use.

Product Questions

Q1: How does the Gloss Polycrylic finish compare to Semi-Gloss or Satin?

Gloss provides the highest level of shine and reflectivity, creating a very polished, almost mirror-like appearance. Semi-Gloss has a noticeable shine but is less reflective than Gloss. Satin offers a soft, low luster. Gloss is very durable and easy to clean but will highlight surface imperfections the most.

Q2: Is Polycrylic Gloss suitable for a frequently used item like a child's wooden toy box?

Yes, Minwax Polycrylic in a Gloss finish is a good choice for such an item. It’s durable, protects against scratches and scuffs, and the gloss surface is very easy to wipe clean. Being water-based, it’s also low odor, which is a plus for children’s items. Three coats would provide excellent protection.

Q3: What is the best way to achieve a flawless gloss finish with Polycrylic?

Meticulous surface preparation is key: ensure the wood is perfectly smooth by sanding with progressively finer grits. Apply thin, even coats with a high-quality synthetic brush, avoiding over-brushing. Sand lightly with very fine sandpaper (220 grit or finer) between fully dried coats (after 2 hours) to remove any dust nibs. Ensure a dust-free environment during application and drying.
