Thompson’s WaterSeal Heavy Duty Deck Cleaner is specially formulated to tackle tough outdoor cleaning and restoration jobs. It effectively removes weathered clear and tinted waterproofers and old semi-transparent stains from decks, fences, outdoor furniture, and other exterior wood surfaces. Beyond stripping old finishes, it works to restore the natural color and beauty to severely weathered and discolored wood without the use of harsh bleach.

This powerful cleaner also removes tough stains from dirt, mildew, algae, and fungus, rejuvenating your outdoor spaces. Unlike many competitive products, Thompson’s WaterSeal Heavy Duty Deck Cleaner is self-neutralizing, which means you save a step as no separate neutralizing solution is required before applying a new waterproofer or stain. It’s also suitable for cleaning composite decking. Prepare your exterior surfaces for a fresh new look with this effective, ready-to-use solution.

Product Application & Use:

Before You Begin (Important Precautions):

  • Corrosive: This product is corrosive. Handle with extreme care.
  • Test Patch: Always conduct a trial patch on an inconspicuous area before applying to the entire surface to ensure desired results.
  • Surface Condition: Can be applied to dry or damp wood.
  • Protect Surroundings: Avoid spraying on windy days. Close all nearby windows and doors. Remove or cover all deck furniture, decorative items, plants, and shrubs. Saturate the ground around plants/shrubs with fresh water before application and cover them. Uncover plants promptly after use and rinse the area again.
  • Protect Yourself: Wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, chemical-resistant eye protection (safety glasses/goggles), and rubber gloves when handling and during application. Avoid prolonged contact with clothing, carpet, or fabric.
  • Ventilation: Use only with adequate ventilation. Ensure fresh air entry. Avoid breathing mist. If experiencing irritation, increase fresh air, wear NIOSH-approved respiratory protection, or leave the area.
  • Redwood Notice: May slightly darken redwood. To brighten wood after using this cleaner, Thompson’s® WaterSeal® Deck Cleaner & Brightener can be used.
  • Work in Sections: Treat small areas at a time (what you can work on within 10-15 minutes). Work backwards on horizontal surfaces; work bottom-up on vertical surfaces.
  • Slippery When Wet: Exercise caution when working on wet surfaces.

Application Directions:

  1. Preparation: Add contents of the container to a plastic bucket or plastic pump-up sprayer. Do NOT use a metal container.
  2. Apply: For ease of application, apply with a pump-up sprayer (coarse spray setting) or use a synthetic bristle brush or roller. Do not apply to an area larger than you can work on within 10-15 minutes.
  3. Dwell Time: Wait 10-15 minutes after application. Do not let the product completely dry on the surface. If it starts to dry, re-wet the surface with a garden hose. Keep your brush wet.
  4. Scrub: Scrub the surface with a synthetic, stiff-bristle brush (do NOT use wire or natural bristle) to remove any stain or finish that does not come up immediately.
  5. Stubborn Areas: If stubborn areas remain, repeat the application and scrubbing in those areas.
  6. Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse the surface completely with a garden hose or pressure washer (on a low setting, taking care not to damage wood), removing all residue. After rinsing the surface, saturate the ground around plants and shrubs with fresh water again.

Dry Time (Before Applying Waterproofer/Stain): Allow the wood to dry thoroughly for 2-3 days (48-72 hours), depending on weather conditions, before applying a Thompson’s® WaterSeal® oil-based waterproofer or stain, or other wood sealers/waterproofers.

Product Questions

Q1: What types of old finishes will this Heavy Duty Deck Cleaner remove?

It’s specifically formulated to remove weathered clear and tinted waterproofers, as well as old semi-transparent stains from exterior wood surfaces. It is generally not designed for removing solid color paints or heavily pigmented solid stains.

Q2: What does "self-neutralizing" mean for a deck cleaner?

Some powerful deck cleaners or strippers are highly alkaline or acidic and require a separate neutralizing or balancing wash (often with a wood brightener) before a new finish can be applied. A “self-neutralizing” product like this one simplifies the process because it typically rinses clean enough that you don’t need that additional chemical neutralizing step before staining or waterproofing, saving time and effort.

Q3: Is this product safe for the plants around my deck?

This product is corrosive and can harm plants. The directions explicitly state to saturate the ground around plants and shrubs with fresh water before application, then cover all plants and shrubs to protect them from overspray, uncover them promptly after use, and then re-saturate the ground around them with fresh water after rinsing the deck. Following these precautions carefully is essential to minimize risk to your landscaping.
