Helmsman Spar Urethane contains UVblockers to reduce the sun’s graying and fading effects, keeping your wood looking beautiful longer. It also creates a barrier against rain and moisture. Its special oil-modified formula (assumed) allows the finish to expand and contract with the wood as seasons and temperatures change, minimizing cracking and peeling. Application Tips (General Guidance – Refer to Can for Full Instructions):
Surface Preparation: Ensure the surface is dry and free of old finishes in poor condition, paint, wax, grease, polish, dirt, or other foreign matter. Sand to obtain a smooth, uniform surface. Remove all dust.
Staining (Optional): If desired, apply Minwax stain to unfinished wood surfaces. Follow directions for application and ensure the stain is completely dry before applying spar urethane.
Stir Product: Stir Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane thoroughly before and during use to ensure any settled solids are re-dissolved. Do NOT shake, as this can introduce bubbles.
Application: Apply thin, even coats using a high-quality natural bristle brush (recommended for oil-modified finishes).
Number of Coats: Apply multiple thin coats (typically 2-3 for general use, potentially more for heavy exposure areas) for best protection.
