Minwax Polyurethane Wood Finish Aerosol spray provides a convenient way to protect and beautify your interior wood projects, including woodwork, furniture, doors, cabinets, and even floors (for small areas or touch-ups). This oil-based clear top coat is one of the most durable coatings for wood, offering excellent protection against scratches, spills, and everyday wear. It delivers long-lasting protection and adds warm beauty to both finished and unfinished wood.

The Clear Semi-Gloss sheen gives your wood projects a sleek, semi-shiny finish that not only protects the natural beauty of the wood but also offers a modern, polished look. Its fast-drying formula and aerosol application make it easy to achieve a smooth, professional result, especially on detailed or hard-to-reach surfaces.

Application Directions (Adapted for Aerosol based on general line instructions):

  1. Surface Preparation: Ensure the surface is dry and free of old finishes in poor condition, paint, wax, grease, polish, dirt, or other foreign matter
  2. Sanding: Sand to obtain a smooth, uniform surface. Remove all dust thoroughly (e.g., with a cloth dampened with mineral spirits).
  3. Staining (Optional): If desired, apply Minwax stain to unfinished wood surfaces. Follow directions for application and ensure stain is completely dry before applying polyurethane.
  4. Shake Can: Shake Minwax Fast-Drying Polyurethane spray can vigorously for about two minutes before use. Continue to shake for 10 seconds occasionally during use.
  5. Protect Surroundings: Protect adjacent areas from overspray. Wet overspray can be removed with mineral spirits.
  6. Spraying Technique: Hold the can vertically approximately 12 inches from the surface. Depress the button fully and spray using an even, sweeping motion with slightly overlapping strokes to ensure a continuous film. On unfinished wood, apply sufficient material to seal open joints, edges, and end-grain.
  7. Apply Thin Coats & Recoat: Apply THIN, even coats to avoid runs and sags. It is critical to Recoat within 2 hours. If you cannot recoat within this 2-hour window, you MUST wait a minimum of 72 hours, then lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper (e.g., 220 grit) and remove dust before applying the next coat. This ensures proper adhesion between layers.
  8. Number of Coats: Apply at least three coats on unfinished wood and two coats on surfaces already finished for optimal durability.
  9. Curing: After the final coat, allow 24 hours before subjecting the surface to normal, light use. Full cure and maximum durability will take longer (refer to can instructions).

Product Questions

Q1: Why is there a specific recoat window of "within 2 hours or after 72 hours" for this spray?

Aerosol polyurethanes often have critical recoat times due to how they cure. Applying a second coat within the first window (e.g., 2 hours) allows it to properly “melt” into and bond with the still-tacky previous coat. If you miss this window, the first coat has started to cure too much; applying another coat before it’s fully hardened (which can take up to 72 hours or more) can cause wrinkling or adhesion problems. Waiting the full 72+ hours and then lightly sanding creates a fresh surface for the next coat to adhere to properly.

Q2: Is one 11.5 oz can enough to finish a small table?

One can covers approximately 50-60 square feet with a single coat. For a small table, depending on its size and the number of coats required (typically 2-3 for good protection), one can might be sufficient. For larger small tables or if you want robust protection with multiple coats, you might consider having a second can on hand.

Q3: How is the Semi-Gloss sheen different from Satin for this polyurethane spray?

Semi-Gloss has a more noticeable shine and reflectivity than Satin. Satin offers a soft, low luster, while Semi-Gloss provides a brighter, more polished look that is also very durable and easy to clean. Both are oil-based and will impart a similar warm amber tone to the wood.
